HMRC is signing people up for Making Tax Digital
If your turnover from self-employment and property on your 2024/25 return was over £50,000 and you hadn't signed up for Making Tax Digital, HMRC is now doing it for you, in stages, and writing to confirm. You then need to check your details, get software and catch up the quarterly updates from 6 April 2026. There are no penalty points for late updates this tax year, but they must be in before you can send your 2026/27 return.

Self-employed mileage rate rises to 55p a mile
From 6 April 2026, the flat rate self-employed people can claim for business miles in a car or van is 55p a mile for the first 10,000 miles in the tax year, up from 45p. The rate after that stays at 25p. Check that your accounting software has the new rate.

Making Tax Digital reaches turnover over £30,000 in April 2027
From 6 April 2027, sole traders and landlords whose turnover from self-employment and property was over £30,000 on their 2025/26 tax return have to use Making Tax Digital. That return is due by 31 January 2027, and HMRC writes to people it finds over the limit. Unlike the April 2026 group, there's no let-off year for late quarterly updates.
